October 2006

Every day we become more aware that in order to respond efficiently to the needs of our community, it is fundamental to interact with the organizations and institutions in the area, to share resources, lessons learned or to face together common problems.

We are happy to be working in close coordination with several schools and universities in the area. This has allowed us to strengthen our Educational Axle, as well as other projects, with the support of university interns.

Here’s a review of our latest progress and new developments!

Thanks for your support!

New activities give a boost to the Educational Axle

Literacy Workshop for adults

Vocational guidance for
teenagers ins schools

Several activities involving children, adolescents and adults are giving a new impulse to the Educational Axle. All of these activities are aimed at building people’s capacities, responding to their desire to learn and outdo and realize themselves.

As regards schools, strong links are maintained by the follow up of cases of Pedagogical and Psychological assistance and by dealing with different problems involving children. Furthermore, several one-week workshops were organized on August for the students from schools No.13 and No.18. At present, a workshop on vocational guidance is being held for students of 9th year of EGB (15 years old). Through this workshop, students are encouraged to reflect on themselves at a time in their life in which they are building their future, contributing to their self-knowledge, strengthening their identity and leading them to discover their own capacities in order to develop a genuine life project.

On the other hand, after performing recreational activities with the children and fostering reading throughout all these years, the Children’s Library has been inaugurated. This is not an ordinary library where children borrow books, but a space to foster knowledge development. While organizing and classifying the books, children learn the concept of numbers and letters, learning how to count and write.

Young people and adolescents are taking part in a project which ensures their secondary or tertiary/university education continuity. For this purpose, study halls, a library, computer rooms, extra coaching and scholarships are made available to those students who need money to afford travelling expenses and materials. Additionally, a guardian attends to personal matters related to the students’ family and educational needs. Students’ personal problems are addressed, and solutions to such problems are discussed in group in order to contribute to every young person's growth.

Lastly, the workshop in which adult education and literacy are promoted is still going on. Through the National Program for Adult Literacy and Elementary Education, carried out in collaboration with the General Sarmiento National University, the 2006 workshop was launched, after having assessed its effectiveness last year. Around six adults attend this workshop twice a week.

Recreational spaces
for children

In this year, ten student’s groups from different universities are carrying out their prepofessional practices at the EnAcción Programs and Projects. In an institutional closeness mood and a constantly growing relationship, the students learn while they join the activities, enriching them with their professional viewpoint and enthusiasm.

From Luján National University, students of the subjects Social Work I, II and III are carrying out practices in the Senior Citizens Group, in the recreational spaces for children, designing and helping with the Psychology Services admission device, helping with the Orientation and First Hearing Service, making a profile of the youngsters and systematizing past years works.

General Sarmiento National University students carry out the Adults Literacy Workshop and a Communication team is starting to make a diagnosis to propose a project of Communication in a common interest area.

Finally, students from the Nutrition Department of the Barceló Foundation University Institute are developing Nutritious Cooking Workshops with the Young Mothers Group, while they are making a research related to the sweetener consumption in soft drinks. Other students are collaborating in the weight and height follow up of children and pregnant women of Social Promotion.

With these activities we continue to strengthen a relationship that started mostly informally around 2001, that benefits both the students that are being trained in their specialties and the activities, and year-to-year is renewed to promote its capacities.
