November 2006

The year is coming to a close and our efforts are turning into achievements, which makes us proud, happy and hopeful for a better future for all.

Internally we see that striving to organize activities and utilize resources enables not only children and youth, but also adults and the elderly to enjoy sports and recreation.

Regionally, the collaboration with several organizations to promote an active and committed social conscience in each neighbour hit a milestone when the First Meeting of Social Organizations and Neighbours was held at the National University General Sarmiento.

Thank you for continued involvement!

The Sports - Recreation Axis expands

The Sports - Recreation Axis is growing, and everyone from teenage girls to grandparents is participating in the different activities, besides the classic football (soccer) team which has the younger kids as its new stars.

Since last month, a group of girls gets together to play handball. Romina and Pamela coordinate the team with Sofia's, Daniel's, and Sergio's help. Towards the end of this year, the girls, together with the coaches, will decide whether they want to participate in a tournament or not.

Thanks to the coordinators of the Youth Program, different suggestions arouse as regards sports and recreational activities. Now, the Third Age group (usually grandparents) is going for walks and learning to ride bicycles. As an extra activity to their regular activities, they go one hour before to their meetings to practice riding on bicycle and organize "outings" to walk twice a week: they walk early in the morning for more than an hour around the neighbourhood..

On Wednesdays and Fridays, kids can enjoy a new recreational space. While they wait for their weight control or their mother attend workshops, they play with other kids memory and strategy games.

The classic Soccer Club has incorporated this year two new categories: Infantiles ("infants") and Pre-Infantiles ("pre-infants"), who thanks to their excellent performance this year ascended to the A category of the tournament organized by San Isidro's municipality. The children are taking new responsibilities, and sharing organizational chores. Parents, as well, are getting more involved in the Soccer Club.

With the expansion of the recreational activities, everybody can exercise, which is really healthy for children and grown-ups. As Sergio Zelaya, in charge of the sports area, says: “Through sports I learned to value and respect my mates. I also learned to support each other, and to make sacrifices; and that is good for everybody”.

Youngsters trained and
visited the families

300 people asisted to
the 1st Congress

From the beginning of this year the Movement for the Popular Letter is being carried out, a project of citizens reflection that EnAcción started along with other community organizations from the northwestern suburban areas of Buenos Aires (see Bulletin 17). Groups of youngsters from these different organizations, after being trained, visited more than 700 families to consult them about their neighbourhood and the municipality.

300 neighbors and members of social organizations from the localities of Moreno, José C. Paz, San Miguel and Malvinas Argentinas gathered on November 4th in the First Congress with the results to write down the Popular Letter. This document is focused on education, health, work, democracy and the 4 municipalities’ transparency.

In a festive and cheerful mood, with the presentation of videos and working in commissions of Infrastructure and Services, Economy, Education, Communication, Sports and Culture the specific proposals for each area have been designed.

The communication and socialization phase of the Popular Letter is set in motion from now on. The neighbours will have the chance to adhere to the document and share it with others through several events.

EnAcción is organizing a cultural event called ¡Aguante la Cultura!, which will take place on November 18th in the neighbourhood. There will be a flag from the Popular Letter on which everybody will be able to stamp their hands or write down their names as a token of adhesion. Furthermore, the Neighbourhood Caravan will visit us and during fifteen days will promote the Letter uniting different locations like Malvinas Argentinas, José C. Paz, San Miguel and Moreno.
