July 2006

We know that each person’s development is comprised of different dimensions. Some of these dimensions are basic and essential to life —such as nutrition— while others allow us to grow holistically and realize our full potential.

In EnAcción we approach these dimensions from different perspectives, through coordinated initiatives and projects geared towards the attainment of a common goal: a holistic development of the people in this neighbourhood. In this edition, you will get a review of the Music Workshop within the Youth Program and the Nutrition Project within the Children Program.

Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks again,

Personalized monitoring during classes

Youngsters play together

Every Saturday, at 2 PM, the Music Workshop opens its doors to young people to learn and play instruments together. Guitar, bass, harmonic, battery: no matter what the instrument is, the Workshops seeks their personal, social, educational and cultural development.

“It is important to enjoy socio-educational spare time, and music is one of the Arts that help to develop many aspects of our personality”, tells us Dante, who is responsible for the Music Workshop along with Claudia. They are both advanced students of the Conservatory.

The kids and youngsters, beginners or advanced students, attend the Workshop until 7 PM participating of classes of theory and instrumental practice and getting together with various musicians to play. Students have been learning musical language reading, scales and chords in the theory and practice classes. Youngsters from different learning levels got together to play some Jazz, Bossa Nova and Blues.

Regarding working material, as well as installing lights and a backdrop, and setting up the instruments, the workshop room was equipped with music stands and a computer. The computer will let the kids record the songs in order to listen themselves and to be able to edit demos.

Twenty kids and youngsters attend the workshop every Saturday. To celebrate our workshop’s recent 4th birthday, an event is being organized, perhaps in the form of a recital – one of the choices the kids would like the most.

CHILDREN PROGRAM
Weight and height monitoring for children and pregnant women

Children up to twelve weight themselves for control

Alter the workshops the food supplement is handed over

During the early years of life, people develop physical and psychic aspects that can’t be changed later. That’s why the Nutrition Service performs weight and height monitoring in pregnant women and children involved in the Social Promotion Service.

The goal is to strengthen the alimentary pattern of the families that show malnutrition signs. Therefore, when a case is detected the children and his mother are invited to the Low Weight Project, where a personalized monitoring is performed, specific workshops take place every first Wednesday of each month and a food supplement (with products that are rich in proteins, A and D vitamins, Calcium and Iron) is handed over.

The performed monitoring, besides the physical evaluation of weight and height, includes an evaluation of alimentary consumption, meaning: what the children eat, how many times a week, if they eats it or don’t it eat for a matter of taste or lack of money, if they have a fridge at home, gas oven and other indicators that have influence in the children’s nutrition and development.

Through these evaluations, during the first half of the year, it was verified that twenty three children continue having low weight problems, four new cases were detected and eight children got recovered, although they are going to continue with the project to fulfil the six months monitoring.

Simultaneously, the Nutrition Service provides workshops for the other programs. Together with the Young Mothers Group, for example, a workshop for mothers and children is being planned, regarding topics as infantile nutrition according age, how to cook cheap and nutritious food and what to do with children when they don’t want to eat.

Laura Pérez, a Nutrition specialist and member of the Children Program Team, is in charge of these workshops. She says: “I like working with the mothers because in that way you can change the destiny of the children”.
